PhD, MD, DSc, Professor, head of the third clinical (vascular) department at N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery; chairman of the task group on surgical treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. Dr. Eliava is a member of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, and Moscow Society of Neurosurgeons.
1976–1980: resident doctor in the Department of Neurosurgery, Institute of Neurology in Tbilisi.
1980–1982: had training in the Vascular Department, N.N. Burdenko Research Institute of Neurosurgery.
1985: defended his thesis (candidate of medical sciences) entitled ‘Clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and microsurgical treatment of arteriovenous malformation of the posterior cranial fossa.’
1992: defended his thesis (doctor of medical sciences) entitled ‘Arteriovenous malformations of deep structures: clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and surgical treatment.’
1992–1994: neurosurgeon in the clinic of Erlangen (Germany). After coming back to Russia, he continued his research and clinical career at N.N. Burdenko Research Institute of Neurosurgery. In 2009, Dr. Eliava became a head of the third clinical (vascular) department.
Research interests: diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular disorders. He developed and implemented into clinical practice various microsurgical methods for patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations; these studies of Dr. Eliava have high scientific value and are very important for routine clinical practice. He has developed original surgical approaches for the removal of deep malformations. These approaches ensure best functional outcomes, since they cause minimal damage.
Sh. Eliava has implemented into routine clinical practice a surgical technique of intravascular blood aspiration for large and giant aneurysms. The improvement of this technique has enabled radical exclusion of large and giant aneurysms of the internal carotid and middle cerebral arteries in most of the cases, which were considered inoperable earlier. N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery has accumulated the largest experience of such operations in the world (more than 150).
Sh. Eliava pays particular attention to teaching. He organizes regular classes for clinical residents, PhD students, doctors, and interns at N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery. Twelve PhD/MD theses were successfully defended under his supervision. He also coordinated research activity on 40 planned scientific topics of the center. Students of Dr. Eliava work not only in N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery, but also in leading clinics in Russia, Europe, and the USA
Sh. Eliava participates in many national and international congresses on neurosurgery, where he is often a chairman. He organized the largest international conference ‘Vascular Experts – 2009’ attended by many world's leading experts.
He has coauthored more than 120 publications, one patent, and one priority for the invention.
In 2012, Dr. Eliava received the national award ‘Vocation.’
